I just tested the kernel linux-image-2.6.31-4-generic_2.6.31-4.23~crimsun1powerdown1_amd64.deb and from what I can tell the issue still stands with popping sound. The popping sound is as loud as before.

I have disabled pulseaudio and is testing with mplayer with audio output alsa and oss, both outputs gives the same sound.

Emanuel, please open a new bug using "ubuntu-bug alsa-base", and retitle it
as recommended in the post to ubuntu-devel-discuss in May. Thanks.
