Bug Description

Just installed Hardy Heron BETA. I'm able to hear sound through my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop in-built speakers right away after installation. But when i connected headphone, I didn't hear sound through the headphone (not through speakers too).
Installed linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-12-generic, but then too i could not hear any sound through headphones.

Below is the hardware and module information.

If someone points me in the right direction, I can work on fixing it in Hardy Heron.

Try adding the following line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

And then reboot. If that does not help, extend the line as follows:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack probe_mask=1

And reboot again.

I am having the same problem as metallicatony in Hardy, only with a different laptop (Fujitsu T2010).

I tried the suggestions Артём Попов posted, but they did not work for me.

One oddity I've found with this laptop is that even in Gutsy, plugging in a speaker/headphones would not automatically mute the internal speaker; that had to be done manually. Also, I would have to check the "headphone" box under Gnome's volume properties to get the jack to work. This does not make it work in Hardy.

Even I tried the same Everett, the solution didn't resolve the problem. This issue existed in Gutsy Gibbon and if its going to pass into Hardy Heron too, then its very bad!

Has anyone tried reproducing this in an Intrepid alpha? I've been holding off until Alpha 3 (which will be the first to have a LiveCD build), but I'm curious to hear if this has been fixed.

Hi Everett,
Though I followed the suggestions given by many, sound didn't come through headphone at all. Though its coming through speakers perfectly. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.
I didn't try the Alpha versions until now. I'm not sure whether it was fixed in it. But I would be glad to help through any ways.
I don't have the Alpha build installed. Do you want me to test this bug in any of the Alpha version and reply back?

Tony,

With Alpha 3 scheduled for release tomorrow, I don't think I'd recommend going to the trouble of installing Alpha 2 to attempt to reproduce this bug (unless you're impatient :-), since Alpha 3 is supposed to include a LiveCD build.

I'll give it a try with the LiveCD when A3 comes out and post results on this thread. I'm crossing my fingers for Intrepid to fix this bug... listening to music through my laptop's *one* built-in speaker is getting really, really, seriously old.

On that note, does anyone know what it takes to get developers to take notice of a bug? Would it help to take a guess at which package the bug is in and assign the bug to that package?

Good news: It looks like this has been fixed in Intrepid Alpha 3! And for the first time on this laptop, plugging in headphones auto-mutes the internal speaker. :)

Bad news: I tried playing all the audio and video files in the "Example Content" folder, and the audio played, but had annoying, screeching, super-glitchy-sounding noises played on top of it.

Has anyone else tried the Alpha? (grab it here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ ) Does this mirror your experience?

If you're keeping score at home, audio works a-ok on my laptop in Intrepid Alpha 5. Plugging in headphones mutes the internal speaker and actually plays sound out of the headphone jack, and the glitchy sound I described in my previous comment is no longer a problem, either.

this is still a problem in ubuntu 8.10, Mint 6, and ubuntu 9.04 beta as of today 4/11/09.
I'm using an acer aspire 6930. also the integrated mic doesn't work either and I don't know if it's related.

adding the line "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base gets the stereo headphone jack working correctly.

the info for Jaunty on the aspire 6930 is as follows:
