Care to test with an Alpha4 LiveCD? The reason I ask is that I have the same audio controller and sound is working perfectly. Thanks.

When you ran the Alpha4 LiveCD, did you verify all the volume controls were unmuted. I recall if you use gnome-volume-control, got to Edit->Preferences, enable each option. In particular I believe the "Surround" option was muted by default and it needs to be unmuted. Thanks.

If I go to preferences I get the message you see in the attachment

if I go to open volume control I get a message "no volume control and/or drivers found"

I tried liveCD and had the same errors ( both alpha3/alpha4 )

Any other ideas ?

What is the status of this bug.
I am using Hardy Alpha5 now
Is there something I should do?

I looked in /dev/snd and I only see 2 files "seq and timer".
I booted Gutsy live CD and there were several others there, sound works in Gutsy

Try using 'alsamixer' from a terminal window and make sure all sound levels are unmuted and turned up. By default, ALSA 1.0.16 in Hardy mutes some controls which need to be unmuted before sound can be heard. I just tested Hardy Alpha5 LiveCD and after unmuting, sound is working fine.

I looked in :
/proc/asound there is no card0 or codec#0

Wish I knew more about linux, but I suspect there is not a driver being loaded

Any other suggestions ?

Just curious if you've modified anything on your own which may have broke something? I don't have this on my machine.

dancer58 (dancer581) wrote :

No I have not modified anything
I have done new install of Hardy 3 times with same results (alpha3 twice and alpha4 once)

There is no sound when booting live CD on any Hardy but there is in Gutsy

Good question though, I have been known to break things in WinXP :)

Can you provide the output of:

If you are using the -386 kernel vs the -generic kernel, see:
My entry in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/204667/

<quote>
I discovered the same problem today when using the 2.6.24.14-386 kernel - required to enable ltmodem/LucentAgere winmodem on my IBM ThinkPad. If I boot into the -generic kernel, all sound works out of the box. If I boot using the -386 kernel no sound.

My resolution:

sudo apt-get install linux-386

[That pulls in the complete kernel, including the missing linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-<currentrev>-386 modules.]
Reboot.
All sound etc., works just fine now.

It's a bit frustrating but I keep trying everybody's suggestions

I suspect that the driver is not being loaded but I don't know how to tell, I.ve got a lot to learn about Linux.

I checked drivers in Gutsy and under "lib/modules/2.6.22-14/kernal/sound" there is:
ac97_bus.ko
sound_firmware.ko
soundcore.ko

The sound_firmware.ko is missing under Hardy

I am looking for answers
I have not heard anything for a long time
Is this bug being worked on???????????

Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I can confirm that my sound works using the live CD of alpha 5, but it
is very soft even with everything turned to the maximum.

Well no I couldn't because I could not figure out how to run the script
while running from a live CD. I did run it under 8.04 and the results
should be there.

Yes.

Perhaps I am just being silly - but I got to the site with the script
and then said to myself, "What do I do now?" I could not save the script
anywhere to execute it. (I did not have any removable drives handy). I
don't know of any way of executing a script from memory.

Or is my abysmal ignorance too shocking?
