I have the same laptop, Ubuntu 16.04 also and the same pitch/whistle static noise in headphones (it doesn't matter whether my sound volume is muted or not). The noise started approximately after login screen appearing. I used this temporary solution http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2204740 using p. 2 and 3:

2. Add this line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi
3. Reload alsa
Code:
sudo alsa force-reload
pulseaudio -k

and it works for me now but I confirm the problem still exists

This is fix on upstream kernel(4.6), should I close this or should this be backported to 4.4?

Patch: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ngkaho1234/ux501vw-config/master/mute-noise/fixup-ux501vw.patch

1) Noise appeared again after wake up my laptop (editing alsa-base.conf approach)
2) I tried to run patch with command

patch < /tmp/fixup-ux501vw.patch

but got a request to input:
"File to patch:"
And I don't know what should I type... I even don't have /sound folder as mentioned in this patch.
Please, advice me. What am I doing wrong?

Anyway, it should be applied for 4.4 kernel if there is a possibility.

@Viacheslav, You need to build the kernel from source and apply the patch there. If you don't know what that means then I suggest on not doing this as it can make your system unstable.

If your brave enough and you want a quicker solution, then I suggest to install the mainline kernel which have this fix. You can read more about it here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

Thanks for help, Zakatell. I started to install 4.6.0 version and this operation was finished, but I saw error messages about nvidia-361 driver while kernel installation. Then I researched that there are bug present and traked in launchpad. I was afraid that system wouldn't started after reboot, so I removed new kernel and use the 4.4.

Nevertheless, I updated nvidia driver, installed 4.6.0 kernel and everything all right for now. Thanks for advice!

Today I had this issue again after waking up. Noise disappeared after rebooting.

Yes, me too, waking up still seems to be buggy. But at least a reboot fixes it.

I have the exact same problem, is there a fix for this now ?
Does upgrading the kernel really works ?

This same bug also affects the ASUS N551VW. Should I file a separate bug report for the ASUS N551VW?

I use 4.7.2 kernel now. Noise is listened after waking up but disappears after rebooting.

IMHO this issue concerns all of us including you, lets keep together in one bug report

Ubuntu 16.04. I've tried to use Kernel version 4.3.5, 4.4.0 and 4.8.17. Still buggy.

Still having this problem in 2020 (18.04)
Spent the last 4-5 hours trying to fix it.
Just found this thread.
Not sure how relevant (new to Ubuntu/Linux since 2019), but I noticed this...

When running 'sudo lspci -v'

BEFORE SUSPEND/SLEEP
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller (rev 31)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Sunrise Point-H HD Audio
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 32, IRQ 141
 Memory at dd428000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
 Memory at dd400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
 Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
 Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

AFTER SUSPEND
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller (rev 31)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Sunrise Point-H HD Audio
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 32, IRQ 131
 Memory at dd428000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
 Memory at dd400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
 Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
 Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

The IRQ number is changed. Not sure why that is happening or if it should be of concern, or creating some sort of conflict?

However, when I run 'pacmd list-cards', I see 'alsa.long_card_name = "HDA Intel PCH at 0xdd428000 irq 141"', so I'm wondering if the OS gets confused somehow upon sleep/hibernate?

I can't get any fixes to work besides rebooting - would really love even a temporary fix here.
(the old fix doesn't work for me on 18.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1547024/comments/3 )
