Bug Description

Happens on Linux Mint 17.1 (Ubuntu 14.04). Linux kernel is 3.19 in order to get the touchpad working

The external microphone connected to the combo jack of this laptop doesn't work, the output does work.

Here is a solution that seems to work for me (Acer Travelmate B115):
add the line [code]options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi[/code]
in the file called /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (or create the file if it doen't exist
In my case that makes internal microphone and headset microphone available. Automatic switching between the two is not perfect but in case it doesn't switch automatically I can fix it in pavucontrol.

I added the line from comment 4 into the alsa-base.conf file, rebooted and everything is the same, can't get it working.

The workaround proposed in comment 4 ended up fixing my issue with an Intel NUC front connector jack.
