Sound is now back on my Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinium

Thanks.

do you mean that this control should be assigned to playback devices by using an asym plugin for playback and capture of Audigy2.pcm.iec958.0

Hello Raymond,

Thanks for reply, but i'm not a very advanced Linux user, I've search for that file on my computer for see the differences but i can't find that one. (Unless you tell me where can i found it).

It's yesterday that i've found that annoying bug ... I've got more than one soundcard on my computer (as you can see on the screenshot).

I'm connected in 5.1 analog with my SoundBlaster Creative Audigy 2 Platinum.
The other sound card is just connected to the VGA monitor for general purpose (while surfing the web or just simple use).

As i say earlier i've just found that bug, and i've just search if anyone had the same issue.
Thanks to Daniel for his help allow me to fix this ...

Maybe the greatest issue is the following fact : Ubuntu miss a full mixer.
Hopefully Ubuntu Store had a few apps that can do the stuff.

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/alsa-lib/pcm_plugins.html

since pulseaudio open front, iec958 for both playback and capture at the same time

you need to ensure those front and iec958 can be open at the same time by using asymmetric plugin so the those controls in hook plugin are used for playback only

http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-lib.git;a=commitdiff;h=ea020c3b2e678f2a29df468ec7da09f9d5785194;hp=922ff0da833e726054df2fc87abdc201fbc5e21b

Hi Raymond,

Thanks for your support ... Hum, this is the first time i've got this error (since i've started to use daily ubuntu), previous releases of ubuntu have no issue of that kind, i've start to use ubuntu on the same audio hardware since 10.10.

Maybe yes for what you ask about : Audigy2.pcm.iec958.0

I've don't know if this is related but i've noticed with ubuntu 14.10, every time you launch audio settings (in the system settings>sound panel), if an other output is selected (exemple : Audigy 2), when you launch the settings menu for audio, it reverts to the sound card on the mainboard ("automatic" deselect Audigy 2, and return on Realtek but no sound until you deselect and reselect audio output : Realtek).

I don't know if this is related or due to alsa version.

I've noticed this behavior since i've migrate, even after a clean install same issue.

Thanks about your work on alsa project ... :)

Joe

post the pulseaudio verbose log

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log

you will notice that pulseaudio Probe the sound card by open devices front,...., IEC958 for both playback and capture

but the Audigy2.conf have lock on the controls and those playback route only used by playback device

you need asym plugin to put those hooks plugin into playback slave of asym plugin

not sure what controls need for iec958 capture device ?

Hello everybody,

Ubuntu is going crazy tonight

No more sound any where even the sound icon has left and the list of sound cards is now empty.

When i've launch the system, icon is here (and sound also) and after a few seconds no more sound on any hardware.

Anyone have an idea?

Joe

Hello,

I've found myself, and resolve the latest issue ...

I've made a test with the guest account and i've noticed sound is working well.

So i've made a backup of pulse folder (~/joe/.config/pulse/) and then i've delete all settings in the pulse folder, and restart the system.

Now it seems to be fixed.

Sound Panel is working again and have a list of all my soundcards.

Hello Raymond,

Raymond (superquad-vortex2) wrote :

THE LOCKING CTL BUG can be easily reproduced by open two terminals

aplay -D front:AUDIGY2 -f DAT Foo1.wav

arecord -D front:AUDIGY2 -f DAT Foo2.wav

you need to change /usr/share/alsa/conf/cards/AUDIGY2.conf

so that the slave capture device has no locks or just define playback slave only

Plugin: asym

This plugin is a combination of playback and capture PCM streams. Slave PCMs can be defined asymmetrically for both directions.
pcm.name {
        type asym # Asym PCM
        playback STR # Playback slave name
        # or
        playback { # Playback slave definition
                pcm STR # Slave PCM name
                # or
                pcm { } # Slave PCM definition
        }
        capture STR # Capture slave name
        # or
        capture { # Capture slave definition
                pcm STR # Slave PCM name
                # or
                pcm { } # Slave PCM definition
        }
}

For example, you can combine a dmix plugin and a dsnoop plugin as as a single PCM for playback and capture directions, respectively.
pcm.duplex {
        type asym
        playback.pcm "dmix"
        capture.pcm "dsnoop"
}

By defining only a single direction, the resultant PCM becomes half-duplex.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to fix the sound problem. For one of the computers which requested help and thank you, I managed to install Lubuntu and have MIXER solved using ALSA sound. We tested several variants of Linux and I stopped in Lubuntu I like very much. LINUX cordial greetings!

PS: This answer was designed using Google Translate. Thanks for understanding.
