can't set default sound device. alsasound-gtk crashes

As the summary states, I'm trying to set my default sound device. I tried through the system settings, and with alsamixer. While all _seem_ to work properly, the default sound device just doesn't get set the way I want it. As can be seen here:

I want the exact reverse of the above settings.

I installed alsasound-gtk and then Daniel Chen's version of asoundconf (https://code.launchpad.net/~crimsun/asoundconf-ui/asoundconf-trunk) and hard linked it to /usr/bin/

First, it only detects one device:

asoundconf list

I have two devices, as you can see above. (Also note that all devices play sound, I just can't change the default device!)

Second, alsasoundconf-gtk CRASHES, when I try to select the one and only device it finds (the Intel ICH6). Here is its output:
