More details with some current tests:

Tests made with both audacity and the Volume Control ... 'stereo' set
throughout and everything fully activated.
volume control shows background/static input that can be increased with
the sliders.

Tests with Audacity:
Set to 'ALSA' ... Speaker and Microphone set to 'default' ... Same both
'Mono' and 'Stereo'
Pressing mic. symbol shows a base static? input all the time. Does not
change during record.
During playback process a base low 'static' can be seen.

Mic ON/OFF button does not work but tried in both positions.
I did patch this problem and found that even with an indicator the
difficulty remains.
Just did a system upgrade and the patch is now gone!!

On Alsamixer:
Turning the headphones on/off makes no change
Other settings are 'unmuted' (00) and set to 100%
Sound card set to 'default' =HDA Intel PCH
Capture: L and R = 100%
Dock not activated and muted

Yes, this bug is still present on my Lenovo W530 under Xubuntu 18.04.5!

From time to time, I can't record with audacity using the headphone attached to the jack. Absolutely no sound appears to be recorded. If I unplug the headset and try to use the builtin microphone, also no recording. The computer recognizes, if i plug or unplug the headphone, as indicated by a popup from pavucontrol.

Today I had no recording with the headset's microphone using Audacity. I stopped the computer and booted into windows without changing anything else. A speech recording and replay was possible there.

Then I rebooted into Xubuntu without changing anything else. Then a recording and replay became possible. I already experienced that some months ago, that booting into Windows10 let me use the microphone again after I rebooted into Linux after a test recording under Windows, which of course had worked flawlessly.

Of course, the microphone mute button was not pressed and its LED was off (in all tested situations). Of course the microphone was not muted in alsamixer and the volumes of Capture were set to 100% for both channels (the microphone of the headset is a mono one, however).

To find out, what's wrong, you probably need this information:
