I did not observe any suspend but when I start a sound check I observe a
flickering of the control bar of the screen. It seems to me that the
output of the sound is not directed to the speaker but to the screen.

The speaker-test in 11.04 gives back an error message compared to the
test in 12.10. Is this the reason, that in 11.04 something is wrong but
the sound is ok and in 12.10 all is ok but not the sound?

I have tested again the reaction in Phonon for both releases 11.04 and
12.10. The result is:

If I compare the reaction in Phonon between 11.04 and 12.10 I can hear
the sound after clicking on test in 11.04 but I can not hear anything by
clicking on front left or front right in speaker placement and testing.

In 12.10 by clicking on test I can hear nothing but as mentioned before
the icons on the right side of the control bar wobble back and forth.
The same happens by clicking on front left or right. It seems that the
sound in this release is always directed to the control bar.

A surprising result:

I have connected two external speakers. I can hear now the sound after
booting in 12.10 and also in Phonon by clicking on test for both devices
'Internes Audio Analog Stereo' and 'Rs880 HDMI Audio [...]...' but the
sound comes always from the external boxes and not from the TV-set over
the HDMI interface.
In the Speaker Placement and Testing menu the Front Left and the Front
Right button works with sound for the Sound Card 'Internes Audio' but
not for the Sound Card 'Rs880 HDMI Audio [...]...'.

After rebooting 12.10 I cannot find these both devices in the menu
device preferences but instead I find 'PulseAudio Sound Server', very
strange!

In 11.04 the situation is as follows: The sound comes from the TV-set or
from the external speakers, but the Front Left and the Front Right
button does not work at all.

Can I give you some further Information in order to clarify these
differences between 11.04 and 12.10?

I performed another test: I installed Kubuntu 11.04 in a new partition. Then I checked the sound. It is possible to hear the sound over the HDMI interface at the speakers of the TV-set or to hear the sound over the external speakers.

Then I upgraded to 11.10. The sound is to hear only over the external speakers but not over the TV-set. The same happens after upgrading to 12.04.
