(I'm Chinese, not really good at English, so excuse me for the mistakes.)

This happens on my ASUS K56CM too.

But, there's something really strange you might want to know:

I installed Ubuntu 12.10 using wubi.exe under Windows 7 sometime earlier, and I got my headphone worked - ONCE AND ONLY ONCE.
I'm not sure when it stopped working, probably after a forced shutdown or a system update.

So, I just uninstalled wubi installation and installed into my hard drive -
I didn't notice the first time, but I just confirmed that headphone doesn't work even in Live-CD, of course it doesn't work after installation.

Anyway, laptop speakers worked pretty well.

(well, I guess wubi just doesn't like me T^T. I never ever get ubuntu works stable under wubi even once. After install into my hard drive, ubuntu works much more stable than wubi installation.)

I just found out how to make my headphone work, really simple, only two steps:

step1. Shutdown
step2. Boot

*ATTENTION* reboot won't work. only boot after a shutdown can make it work. no matter if I reboot from Ubuntu or Windows 7, My Headphone never works. but if I shutdown from Ubuntu or WIndows 7, then boot into Ubuntu, my headphone will work perfectly.

Well, I really don't know why. Anyone knows how this works, please send me an e-mail, I'll be appreciate ^ ^ !

I tried almost everything I could find that made sense, and in the end it seems like RadarNyan's workaround is what I was looking for.

The headphones sometimes did work and sometimes didn't but I couldn't find any corelation with anything I was doing. It must have been this...

  Yes,thanks for the radarnyan ! ! !
 I`m a chinese student,the english is a little poor.
I think the reason for this is that we hava 2 even more os in our computuer.
if we boot from the other os, eg windows7.
so the computer will be somehow affacted, and then we restart our computer to unbuntu the computer will not to reload some software about sounds .
so the problem is out.
