After upgrading from 12/04 to 12/10 I have the same problem - no sound any more, neither builtin nore headphone.

After reboot with kernel 3.2.0-34 (from 12/04) I could play sound on builtin speakers and headphone.
Rebooting again with kernel 3.5.0-19 I got sound up to lightdm, but after logging in sound no longer was available (only a dummy device appeared in sound configuration).
The problems seems to be related to the time I need to login. If I wait a minute before logging in the sound configuration dialog propperly shows the devices.

Just in case anybody sees this old thread and wonders if ALC271X works for Linux:

I have

    $ aplay --list-devices
    **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 0: ALC271X Analog [ALC271X Analog]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    $ uname -a
    Linux pc08 3.11.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 9 16:20:46 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    $ cat /etc/issue
    Linux Mint 16 Petra \n \l

and it works fine.
