This is a recent problem. I have tested many kernels and the problem still. Searching not give a solution, so this is a bug

change the TLV dB information for the Master volume
 on all Sigmatel HDA codecs to indicate the the minimal volume setting
 actually mutes.

This release of Ubuntu is no longer receiving maintenance updates. If this is still an issue on a maintained version of Ubuntu please let us know.
