Bug Description

Binary package hint: alltray

Alltray (0.69-1ubuntu1) in combination with Thunderbird (2.0.0.12+nobinonly-0ubuntu1) causes 100% cpu load on current Hardy (alltray --show --no-alltray thunderbird). For other applications I could not reproduce the problem. Nor does it occur when manually selecting the window (by pin-pointing it with the cursor). On Gutsy, this worked perfectly fine.

Same problem here with hardy. I also start skype with alltray. Besides, if I start thunderbird with alltray (alltray -na thunderbird), thunderbird opens but won't minimize, it starts with open window.
Because of 100 % CPU load the fan won't quit running...

Please try using the version I have built on my PPA: http://launchpad.net/~mtrausch/+archive

This bug is caused by the (original) clash for bug 106583 and bug 178541, so if using the build I have in my PPA works for you, please comment back here to let me know that the problem has gone away. Then I will mark this bug as a duplicate of bug 106583, which I am attempting to get the fix for released into Hardy.

I upgraded to your PPA version and confirm that on my system the CPU loading issue is fixed. I am running Ubuntu Hardy 64, and TBird 2.0.0.14 (20080505)

Using mtrausch's PPA and the 100% CPU problem is still present. In addition, I lose window control of Thunderbird and it causes Compiz crashes across the board.

J. Wood, can you tell us how to duplicate the problem to get Alltray to spin the CPU? I suspect that it may be a different problem than originally reported, but would need more information to be sure.

Yeah, sure. The problem seems to be very sporadic.
I installed alltray. From there I went into Thunderbird's launcher (on my gnome panel) and added the lines "alltray -stask thunderbird" to the COMMAND line. It launches fine, but then I get graphic glitches after a few moments. The buttons on the title bar vanish and I cannot interact with Thunderbird. My CPU spikes to 100% and gnome becomes unresponsive. I was forced to hard-restart the last time this occured. Some times are worse than others, where Thunderbird will remain functional for most of the day. Usually, the rule of thumb is that if it launches without crashing the system, it's generally balanced. But, after a period of time, it begins to lose stability. Memory leak?

OK. Could you run alltray with the -d option and the next time you have this problem, attach the output from it? In a terminal, for example, run:

  alltray -d -stask thunderbird > .logs/alltray-thunderbird

And that will include a large amount of debugging information for AllTray in it. If you can attach that logfile here the next time you have an issue (I can't seem to make it happen) that would be helpful.

Also, which desktop environment & window manager are you using? Compiz and GNOME? If so, I assume that the window decorator you're using is gtk-window-decorator, yes?
