Bug Description

Binary package hint: alacarte

Hi

I experience problems to rename programs or categories using alacarte.

It just doesn't work as it should.

You have to give more details. What exactly did you try to do, what happened, what did you expect to happen?

Changed in alacarte:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

It's nearly too easy to explain:

-open alacarte
-doubleclick an item
-rename
-close

that does work on SOME apps in my menu
but most of them CANNOT BE RENAMED this way.

I tried this with several feisty installs, upgrades etc.

also the categories (Games, Office, Internet) cant be renamed.

moreover the window which is opend to edit the item is not an active window.

I can confirm this. Running a german uptodate feisty here. Steps to reproduce e.g.

1) Open alacarte as user
2) Try to rename the "Internet" category by double clicking on the entry and entering a new name
3) Close the "rename" dialog window
4) The name is still "Internet"

or

1) Open alacarte as user
2) Try to rename "Video-Player" inside Mutilmedia by double clicking on the entry and entering a new name
3) Close the "rename" dialog window
4) The name is still "Video-Player"

etc... but renaming e.g. "Ekiga Softfone" into "Ekiga" works.

This doesn't look like a bug in alacarte. The .desktop/.directory file is created correctly in $HOME/.local/share/applications or desktop-directories when you rename an entry. However the change is not picked up by gnome-panel.
A recompiled gnome-panel without any patches doesn't have this bug.

But if the rename doesn't take in alacarte either that'd be a gnome-menus issue, not gnome-panel.

Oh, wait, this is because of the language pack stuff. I'm assuming gnome-panel's gnome-desktop-item-edit only changes Name[en] and etc instead of changing the Name key too so Ubuntu's modified gnome-panel/gnome-menus ignores it and uses it's language pack.

I'm sorry. Recompiling without patches doesn't fix it. Changing the LANG to C however does.

I also noticed that removing X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain= from the .desktop file in $HOME/.local/share/applications helps.

This also looks like a dupe of #85216

Indeed it does, marking as such.
