Bug Description

If I try to drag, e.g., the Control Center menu item from System->Preferences->Control Panel to simply the root System menu, nothing happens. Of course, I've unhidden it.

Fedora 7 includes the Control Panel in their System menu, so I wonder if there's a patch missing from Ubuntu Gutsy yet or something.

(side note, I wonder how the gnome-panel "Main Menu" applet approaches this versus the GNOME "Menu bar" applet.)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

This still occurs for me in ubuntu 7.10. If you try to add an item to the system menu, it simply doesn't work. No error message or crash or anything. However if you look at the help page for alacarte it says this:

You can modify the contents of the following menus:
              Applications menu
              System ▸ Preferences submenu
              System ▸ Administration submenu

So this behaviour is probably by design or omission.

Same in Hardy 8.04 Beta with all the latest updates. I wonder why you can change pretty much everything except the System menu...seems weird, and probably not too hard to fix.

I'd also love to see this behavior changed. It would be nice to be able to add items to my System menu.

Happens to me as well in Hardy.

What is really happening, is that alacarte is not updating the screen properly. You can add an item, but it won't show it. After I added a New Seperator, all of a sudden all my newly added items magically appeared. Since then, alacarte seems to behave again.
