Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This is probably a bug in aeolus then and not software-center which is the software that installs other software.

affects: software-center (Ubuntu) → aeolus (Ubuntu)

Attempting to run Aeolus (version 0.8.4-5) on Ubuntu Oneiric, it doesn't start there either.

When I try to run it from the terminal the following error message is printed:
$ aeolus
Warning: memory lock failed.
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server socket
jack server is not running or cannot be started
Error: can't connect to JACK

Still present in aeolus 0.8.4-6 on Ubuntu Raring. Doesn't seem to make a difference whether you select realtime JACK or not when installing it.

Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to report this. There are much newer versions of aeolus in Ubuntu now. Can you please confirm this is fixed in a more recent version (eg. Ubuntu Xenial - 1604 or Artful - 1710)?

I still get a similar error message, see below. Retested on Ubuntu 16.04 and bionic (the error message is taken from the latter)

It should be noted that I'm running stock Ubuntu, not Ubuntu Studio, so I do wonder whether there are some additional steps to setup jack or whether that should be done automatically by the package...

$ aeolus
Warning: memory lock failed.
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
jack server is not running or cannot be started
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for 4294967295, skipping unlock
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for 4294967295, skipping unlock
Error: can't connect to JACK
