I use Mythbuntu. I had fallen behind in upgrading, because I was reasonably happy with the stability of 10.10. However, when the message came that updates were no longer supported, I decided to upgrade, progressively, through 11.04, 11.10 & 12.04.

Towards the end of the 11.04 upgrade process, the following was reported:

"Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Upgrade complete

The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade process."

Further to this, I identified that package adobe-flashplugin, ver. 10.0,22.87-1 is broken.

I manually tried to remove adobe "Completely", using Synaptic "broken packages" function, but:

"E: adobe-flashplugin: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

Update Manager requested I fix broken pkg indexes:

"sudo apt-get install -f"

"The following packages will be REMOVED:
  adobe-flashplugin
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 10.2 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Y"

"(Reading database ... 282241 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing adobe-flashplugin ...
update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin.
update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin.
dpkg: error processing adobe-flashplugin (--remove):
subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
postinst called with argument `abort-remove'
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 adobe-flashplugin
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"

I am now unsure of the status of my PC.

Update Manager is locked, & Synaptic doesn't respond to doing anything with adobe.....

I don't know whether I will be able to reboot the system...

Regards, Garry.

I asked a Linux expert to help me on this. The following are the steps I followed.

After checking many files, & running some programs, he identified that the problem was caused by the line/s above:
"update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin."

He then asked me to edit "/var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-installer.prerm", & delete all packages that weren't installed, including iceape-flashplugin.

Then run: "sudo sh -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-installer.prerm remove"

Then run re-install firefox (which by then was trated as a broken package.

This removed adobe-flashplugin & Update manager is again working.

Regards Garry.
