Bug Description

I recently upgraded from Edgy to Feisty (I am running amd64) and noticed my adesklets were no longer coming up. I currently have 0.6.1-2build1 installed. Running adesklets --nautilus did nothing. So I deleted my .adesklets file and tried to re-register my weatherforecast desklet. Here is the error I recieved.

posh@posh:~/weatherforecast-0.2.0$ ./weatherforecast.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "./weatherforecast.py", line 41, in <module>
    import adesklets
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/adesklets/__init__.py", line 30, in <module>
    from adesklets.initializer import _Initializer
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/adesklets/initializer.py", line 13, in <module>
    from children_handler import _Children_handler
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/adesklets/children_handler.py", line 5, in <module>
    from signal_handler import Signal_handler
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/adesklets/signal_handler.py", line 12, in <module>
    class Signal_handler:
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/adesklets/signal_handler.py", line 20, in Signal_handler
    func = posix_signal.signal
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'signal'

Using update-alternatives I switched my default python to python2.4 and everything worked. So it appears to be something related to 2.5. Maybe something with posix_signal.so. I checked and I do have the file /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/posix-signal.so.

I just thought I would email you back and say I have been unsuccessful in
getting adesklets to work still. I assume its something on my end now since
you have them working there. I have tried all kinds of things to make sure
I have all remnants removed but it could just be something on my system. I
can register the applets and when I test them I get a flash on the screen
but when I run adesklets --nautilus I get nothing. I'll let you know if I
ever figure it out.

Well after spending a few more minutes working on it they are now working.
I'm not sure what fixed it other than I rebooted since the last time I
tried. Maybe that did it maybe not... but either way they are working now.

Thanks!

Well, considering the issue is a showstopper, the fix was made in May and it's July now, maybe it's time to release a package with the fix in it?

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 beta?

I haven't checked myself, but since 8.10 beta comes with Python 2.5.2 (package 2.5.2-1ubuntu1 at the time of writing), it's likely. I still get amd64 Ubuntu users writing me about this on a regular basis: the fix provided above always proved sufficient to them so far.

I just wanted to point out that this bug made adesklets package borrowed from Debian unusable on the amd64 platform for all Ubuntu releases since Feisty. If it gets closed without having a direct confirmation it's no longer a problem (and I don't see how I wouldn't be) because no one care, I think Ubuntu should consider dropping the package altogether, at least on amd64.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

This issue is still open and unresolved in 10.4 and python 2.6.5, with the adesklets version in the official lucid repository.
