Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

After my shiny new Kubuntu Flight 7 install, I went to install the 127 update packages available. Well, The updater (and stand alone adept) would start to install the upgrades, and then immediately tell me that the transaction failed.

I finally discovered that my network was not up (another bug, also reported). So, it would seem that instead of reporting "transaction failed" adept needs to first determine if the network is up, and return an informative error message about that.

I don't agree with this bug being a "wishlist" bug. If a user does not know their network is not up, and they try to update, they are immediately going to write for help saying "Updates aren't working," or they are simply going to give up on Ubuntu because it "doesn't work right." I know I would have given up if I hadn't known to go to the prompt and type "apt-get upgrade," which is how I found out my network was down.

You don't have to agree. It is wishlist though. You are asking for a totally new feature. And missing features != bugs in my world. Please leave it on wishlist, there is absolutely no point in bloating the severity. Thanks.

Would be nice if adept checked knetworkmanager for network status like some other applications do now. That is, once network-manager is fixed so that it always knows correctly when you are online.

I Agree, right now the adept updater runs before knetworkmanager was able to make a wireless connection. This is not a wishlist, it's a bug imho.

It would be nice if Adept queried networkmanager for the network status and didn't start downloading before the network was up. (Probably would need to inform the user about that too.)

Unfortunately, Adept has been unmaintained by its original authors for several years, and nobody has stepped up to continue its development. (Though the Muon Suite is arguably its spiritual successor) As such, Adept has been removed from releases of Kubuntu from 12.10 onwards, and no additional improvements will be made to the software.

We thank you for reporting this bug all the same, and apologize for taking so long to respond to it.

Adept has been in the unmaintained state for a few years. Use muon[1] as replacement .
