What's the downside of building it in? Pursuant to UDS discussions regarding faster boot we're considering building in even more modules, especially file systems, e.g., modules that are boot essential or related to boot essential modules. I think ecryptfs and it's encryption dependent modules are quite safe to build into the kernel.
