Bug Description

[Ubuntu 8.10]

Hello,
I recently got a brand new Toshiba Satellite L350 (Intel Centrino Core duo 2). All hardware is working really good on Ubuntu 8.10, except the fan.

I noticed that fan starts to run, apparently for no reason, and never stops.
This happens always (but not only in this case...) when I run synaptic or when I'm updating Ubuntu.

Can someone tell me why this happens?
Reading forums, I installed the CPU temperature applet but it's always at 0°C - Is it working fine? The laptop never seems too hot.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6898, and I share the same problem.
The problem is that there is no temperature reading for the CPU, that's why it shows 0°C like the original bug reporter says.

After installing lm-sensors, and running 'sensors-detect' the module 'coretemp' was suggested to be loaded.

Loading it I now get the following output from 'sensors':

$ /usr/bin/sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +0.0°C (crit = +92.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +52.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +85.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +51.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +85.0°C)

running 'acpi -t':

$ /usr/bin/acpi -t
     Battery 0: Full, 100%
     Thermal 0: ok, 0.0 degrees C

I also tried adding 'acpi_osi="Linux" ' to the kernel options, as this was said to help with this issue, but it does not solve the problem in my case.

With no temperature reading, the fan does not work properly.

Why is the CPU temperature reading module 'coretemp' not loaded as part of a normal Ubuntu laptop installation?
Is it automatically detected and loaded in Jaunty?

Attaching my output of 'lspci -vvn'.

Acpitools tells me I don't have a Toshiba
Tried acpi_osi="Linux" to no avail. Disassembled DSDT table, reassembled with no errors.
Tried acpi_osi="Windows 2006"; "Windows NT" ( got these from the table) with some changes, all worse!

Attached is output from Acpitool. Notice there are no thermal trip points set, and most of the devices at the end are disabled.
Also attached is the output from /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THZN/polling_frequency and trip_points.
Notice polling is disabled, and the only trip point is 105 degrees which doesn't give me much comfort.

Any help would be appreciated - I'll be the guinea pig !

By the way, all is well with the fan in Vista, but that is about all that is well in Vista.

Update:

For Subscribers to this bug:

Somewhere along in my research I read about ACPID .....look it up if your interested. Anyhow, I went to the System Menu, Administration then Services, and then disabled ACPID (power management), then rebooted.

I now have the brightness keys working, muting etc but best of all the FAN comes on around 50 degrees and shuts itself off at around 40....thank god. I was becoming obsessive about the stupid fan. Even thought of storing the laptop in the fridge....

I should mention that I also have acpi_osi="Linux" installed.

I'd say there is a bug in the ACPID scripts....but at this point I don't really care, as it all seems to work just fine.

Ciao !

Eventually, I've found that it was PowerPlay and not ACPI that was causing this issue....PowerPlay is used by ATI card to reduce consumption of graphic cards....and with open source drivers, it's not implemented yet...so I've installed proprietary drivers and now, the fan is running at normal speed and the general temperature is even cooler...
Something positive : powerplay will be soon available with latest branch of open source drivers ;)

Is there anyone already having a solution for this? Iam able to reproduce this issue. The fan is not spinning at all when using linux, the temperature is readed out correctly. Its at normal usage, with just some internet serving going up to 70C. Once the temperature raises to 80C, the fan spin up at full RPM, however it doesnt spin down.
This is happening with a toshiba L350-168 laptop.

Also seeing same issue as above.

(1) Default fan behavior is it will not come on unless I open the ubuntu software center , then it comes on full blast and will not turn off. Monitoring temperature is impossible.

(2) doing "sudo apt-get install acpi" allows temperature of CPUs to be checked from command line, but fan will not come on no matter what after that is installed. I just get to watch my processor temp creep up until I panic around 70 C and restart with Windows 7 so the fan will come on and cool it down.

(3) adding acpi_osi="Linux" to /boot/grub/menu.lst on the appropriate line (coresponding to the kernel I boot) AND haveing acpi installed will start the fan on some low speed at cold boot, and it will stay on continuously at that speed. However, the fan will turn off upon hibernation, and not turn back on again after that unless the laptop is restarted.

#3 seems to be best senario, but not adequate for CPU-intense activities

Or you can just wait for the kernel >=2.6.35 when the power management will be implemented ;)

This bug is NOT an ACPI bug (at least for the L505 Toshiba model) ;)

Thanks Anakin Starkiller for the info... I have since learned enough to realize that I have an intel chipset with integrated graphics so the ATI is actually not applicable to my situation. I was able to workaround this issue by removing/unistalling ACPI, adding acpi_osi="Linux" to the grub menu list, and installing lm_sensors. Fans still dies sometimes when resuming from suspend.

Hi Tose,

The only solution I came up with is to put a 30 second delay in the
grub boot menu. This seems to stabilize the temperature of the computer
before loading the OS. I also notice a difference when the computer is
cold booted with power plugged in, restarted on battery etc etc. You
may find a combination that works for you. Not very techie, but if it
works .....

Thanks :-), i read your posts on "Linux Forums" and i will use this for my problems :

1. For CPU Fan and Fn keys :

first. sudo apt-get install sensors-applet
next. sudo sensors-detect

next. answer yes to everything.

exit then restart computer.

next. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub and then change

GRUB_CMLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to read

..."quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux"

next. sudo update-grub to update /boot/grub/grub.cfg

exit then restart computer

Then System/Admin/Services and disable ACPID power management and reboot

2. For touchpad :

edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Make a backup of the file, then:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Find the touchpad section:

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
    Driver "synaptics"
    Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
    Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
    Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
    Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "0"
    Option "MinSpeed" "1.0"
    Option "MaxSpeed" "1.8"
    Option "AccelFactor" "0.3"
    Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
EndSection

Please tell me if this solve my problems, i will also like to integrate windows xp becouse i need Adobe CS5 and Cubase, FL studio :-S. If i stuck somewhere i will install Windows 7.

It looks like I am not the only one who is suffering problems with ACPI and overheating issues in Toshiba Laptops. Before I proceed with my question, I would suggest everyone to keep away from Toshiba. This Laptop is the worst I have ever seen. I had IBM ThinkPad for years and tried many Linux distros on it and never had a single issue!

Well, I've got the Satellite M505-S4972 laptop and yesterday, I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition. The fan is not working and I tried many things but no luck! I cannot also change the brightness of my LCD becaue Fn doesn't work.. I have updated the system and downloaded all packages available but still have the same problem..

I have also tried to alter some of the parameters in the Grub file but it didn't work for me!

I really liked Ubuntu and I want to stuck with it. Any help??

Hey Zaher,

The only thing that worked for me with the fan ( believe me I
looked ! ) was to put a 30 second delay in the grub boot menu, and leave
the rest of grub alone. Then do cold boots. This seems to allow the fan
to stabilize before ACPI takes over. I think I read somewhere about a
"race" condition.....

In grub change the line that looks like this to :

GRUB_TIMEOUT=30

as for your Fn (brightness?) issue look here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1662130

There is a ton of stuff on the forums - you will see. I do not think
you will get much of a response here in Launchpad - the forums are a
better place to help you...
