Bug Description

Volume keys don't affect master volume anymore since upgrading to intrepid 8.10. Mute-key is also broken.
The above keys work just fine when using guest account, but not as a regular user.
They worked fine in hardy 8.04. When watching a movie in mplayer, mplayer reacted and changed volume.

1. Intrepid 8.10
2. unknown
3. Change/mute of audio volume
4. Nothing happened

thank for you report but to be able to fix the hotkeys on your laptop we need three things:

   1. What the key *should* do.
   2. What keycode (magic number) the key produces on your laptop.
   3. How to identify your laptop by the manufacturer and model.

You can see the following documentation to know how to do that:

By following the link from your post above I found out the problem. The actions "volume up", "volume down", "mute" had the wrong keycode assigned to them. I have changed them now, through System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts.

For completeness I provide the info below anyway:

1. What the key *should* do.

Key1: Raise volume, looks like a plus-sign
Key2: Lower volume, looks like a minus-sign
Key3: Mute sound, looks like a speaker with a ring with a diagonal line struck through next to it.

These keys are located on a touchsensitive bar above the keyboard. They have blue leds behind them and the mute key turns red if sound is muted. The plus and minus-keys have aslider between them that allows for rapid raise or lowering the volume. This is transparent to the os, ie it looks like the key is repeatedly pressed.

2. What keycode (magic number) the key produces on your laptop.

Key1: Was 0xae, changed to XF86AudioRaiseVolume
Key2: Was 0xb0, changed to XF86AudioLowerVolume
Key3: Was 0xa0, changed to XF86AudioMute

Additionally I found these to be set to the wrong key:
Play/Pause key: Was 0xa2, changed to XF86AudioPlay
Previous track key: Was 0x90, changed to XF86AudioPrev

3. How to identify your laptop by the manufacturer and model.

Hewlett-Packard
HP Pavilion dv2000 (RN081EA#UUW)
F.34

Thanks for the information you provided.
Since you have fixed your problem, maybe we should close to report. However, it is not normal than your shortcuts were broken so I let this report opened.
