hardy heron suspending fails system crashes

Hooked up computer to a knew Toshiba 26" lcd tv , when pc screen is not being used and is in tv mode, the suspending fails and causes a system wide failure , causing the computer to reboot ; is there anyway to fix this ,other then disabling The gnome power management (apmd) service. tanks for your attn.
