Bug Description

My laptop (HP nc8430, Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, ATI x1600) is very hot with Ubuntu 7.04 installed. If I boot Windows, the CPU temperature is normal but in Feisty it gets over 80 degrees Celsium and I have frequency scaling enabled and fans turned on all the time.

Yes. me too ! I thought it was only an impression but it may be real. I think I lost one third of my laptop autonomy recently : 3 hours before, 2 now. To be sure i will test the autonomy with Edgy liveCD and Feisty. If confirmed, it would be a HUGE regression.

Using a centrino dothan platform.

Yeah, I also lost battery life - it used to be an hour longer with Edgy installed.

Maybe you not running frequency scaling for CPU or this not work correctly?

My battery life too has been fairly reduced. I just updated to 7.10 beta last night and I'm also having issues with the DVD drive constantly clicking when the tray is shut.

Are the battery and / or heat issues linked to the fact that ATI support is shoddy at best?

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

I'm running Hardy for a while now and I can confirm that my laptop is still considerably hotter when I'm running Ubuntu than when I'm running Windows XP. I haven't tested battery life yet though.

I also have a HP nc8430 T7200 running uncomfortably hot.
I'm on Hardy Beta 64-bit, all updates to date installed.
I also dual-boot with WinXP, there, the temps and battery life are much better.
I would like to change to Linux completely, but on laptops there still is some streamlining left to do. Heat/power consumption is clearly one of the major problems.
Otherwise, Hardy is VERY close to being a viable option for general use by an average user.

I have a new (no dust here) Toshiba Satelitte L350 and installed a dual boot Vista / Kubuntu 8.10 .

In Vista temperature is always okay and fan behaves normal.
In Kubuntu fan is not working (with very high temp) or is always working at full speed .

I also have a fairly new Toshiba L350D Laptop which has Windows Vista and Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10.

AMD Turion 64 x2 TL60 CPU
ATI Radeon X1250 GPU, with December release ATI Drivers installed

When plugged into AC Adapter fans come on at 80C and then as the laptop cools the fans behave appropriately. I think 80C is a bit high for the fan to start coming on but at least it seems to work more or less.

On battery, however the fans do not come on unless they were on as the laptop started. If I startup the laptop from cold, the fans never come on and the system just gets hotter and hotter (until... I have no idea, I usually switch back to Windows when it gets above about 95C). If I run the system in Ubuntu until it gets hot then restart it, the BIOS turns the fans on and as Ubuntu runs the fans stay exactly as they were [i.e. on at the same speed] when Ubuntu started and so the computer does cool down, but that means that Ubuntu is not controlling the fans at all in that case, just leaving them as they were when the computer started. If I reduce the CPU Frequency back to 800Mhz it usually cools down without the fan but the system also slows down as a result [which obviously I don't always want].

I should add that under Windows the CPU temperature averages at around 48C when idle, rising to maximum 75-80C under full load. Only by covering the vent will it get hotter than 80C in Windows whereas in Ubuntu even when plugged into the AC Adapter it takes until it reaches 80C before the fan comes on.

A possibly related point is that the wireless card also appears to be overheating as it works initially but then as it gets used it stops working. Resetting it using ifconfig <if> down, and then ifconfig <up> and then iwconfig and dhclient to set it often makes it work again but for less time each time I do it, hence the overheating suspicion. If I try resetting it immediately after it stopped workign it usually works for only a few seconds/minutes. I should note that I am always running from battery when using wireless because I have no internet in the building where I keep the charger. In case its relevant this model of Toshiba laptop has a Realtek RTL878B wireless chipset.

Imho the main problem isn't the CPU but the GPU, I have an Asus F3jP with an Ati mobility x1700,
I run a 9.04 ubuntu, and i undestand my pc become hot cause my GPU work always at full frequency!
With old Ati driver I can set the frequency but now with this open driver I can't so my videocard work always at 452/351 MHz.

Scaling GPU\MEM with ATI DRIVER
1: 128/135 MHz [low voltage]
2: 392/252 MHz
* 3: 452/351 MHz [default state]

Please help! Ati mobility need powerset!

Matic Zgur, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
