Bug Description

It's probably possible to disable the dvd drive when the user does not need it.
It should save some power.

It'd be useful for http://udu.wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerSavingMode

just guessing here, but maybe acpi-support is a good candidate for this (or kernel?).

This sounds like a great idea. I hardly ever use my laptops DVD/CD drive and any tiny bit of power I can save is worth it.

The upstream Linux 3.9 kernel finally contains ZPODD, the Zero-Power Optical Device Driver. It's only for SATA optical disk drives though. A PPA of this kernel is available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and instructions on how to install and uninstall it are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

Is this issue still occurring on Ubuntu 20.04?
