Bug Description

- Crash on battery run-down:
When my laptop battery power ran out, the whole Ubuntu 7.10 system crashed rather than hibernating. I'd been been editing an OpenOffice word doc when the screen went black, I momentarily saw some ascii messages that were not there long enough to read, and the system died.
- then failed file recovery:
Even more surprisingly, on restart, OpenOffice file recovery only retrieved the file in it's original state, before I'd spent two hours in the previous session working on it, even though I'd regularly been saving it! And I thought Linux was supposed to be stable and reliable. Back to Windows for me...

This battery run-down hibernate failure has been reported before. Considering the consequences, I'd have thought this (Bug #39564) would have more than a 'Medium' importance rating:
- Bug #39564, first reported on 2006-04-14 by gmlion, 'Hibernation and Suspend doesn't work on acer aspire 1603 LM'
and perhaps related to:
- Bug #40368, first reported on 2006-04-20 by petrme, 'Dapper: Hibernation/Sleep doesn't work on Acer TM 3010'
- Bug #39139, first reported on 2006-04-11 by VesaNieminen, 'Shutdown fails after suspending to ram'
- Bug #45781, first reported on 2006-05-20 by toko, 'hibernation not sensitive to the ACPI_HIBERNATE value'

Also this:
- Bug #68148, first reported on 2006-10-25 by professordes, 'IBM X40 Thinkpad fails to suspend/hibernate (edgy with latest updates)'

By the way, I'm totally new to Linux/Ubuntu and have no idea whatsoever how to do weird command line stuff. So if there's any other way to diagnose and fix this, with a GUI for ACPI settings for example, I may be able to stay with Ubuntu (7.10, gutsy, Kernel Linux 2.6.22-14-generic, GNOME 2.20.0)

My laptop is a Novatech NNB-573 with:
 Intel Celeron Mobile M530 1.7GHz,
 Intel GMA X3100 Graphics
Intel 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA IDE Controller, Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub, Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller

For OpenOffice.org to recover your document to a different state you have to set the "Tools->Options->Load/Save->Save AutoRecovery information every" to some value and check the box to make it active.
