When my laptop battery power ran out, the whole Ubuntu 7.10 system crashed rather than hibernating. I'd been been editing an OpenOffice word doc when the screen went black, I momentarily saw some ascii messages that were not there long enough to read, and the system died.
- then failed file recovery:
Even more surprisingly, on restart, OpenOffice file recovery only retrieved the file in it's original state, before I'd spent two hours in the previous session working on it, even though I'd regularly been saving it! And I thought Linux was supposed to be stable and reliable. Back to Windows for me...

This battery run-down hibernate failure has been reported before. Considering the consequences, I'd have thought this (Bug #39564) would have more than a 'Medium' importance rating:

By the way, I'm totally new to Linux/Ubuntu and have no idea whatsoever how to do weird command line stuff. So if there's any other way to diagnose and fix this, with a GUI for ACPI settings for example, I may be able to stay with Ubuntu (7.10, gutsy, Kernel Linux 2.6.22-14-generic, GNOME 2.20.0)

For OpenOffice.org to recover your document to a different state you have to set the "Tools->Options->Load/Save->Save AutoRecovery information every" to some value and check the box to make it active.

When batery is low, instead of hibernate, it just turn off with lost of all data.
This problem still exits on ubuntu 8.10 running on Lenevo R61 with nvidia.
