system locks up after installing upgrade to 16.04

System appears normal for a few minutes then stops recognizing mouse movement. Power down and up brings it back but the problem repeats.

There never was a diversion of ack-grep to ack in the package. This error message looks a lot like a diversion done by the local system administrator, i.e. is a problem of a local, unsupported modification.
Remove to local diversion (e.g. with "dpkg-divert --remove /usr/bin/ack-grep" as root) and the package will install fine.
