Bug Description
Binary package hint: acidrip
When using AcidRip to generate .avi files from a DVD source, the resulting .avi files displayed in the Nautilus file explorer are normally a 'film strip' icon containing what seems to be a random frame from the source video stream. This is very handy and a useful way to identify particular files easily. However, sometimes the resulting .avi file doesn't have an icon like this; rather the icon is a generic 'reel of movie film' rather than a snapshot from the video.
It seems to be random as to whether you get an icon that is a snapshot or just the 'generic' one, although more often than not you do get a snapshot icon (I would say about 80% of the time it works as you would like).
Ubuntu 8.04.1, release 8.04
I recently noticed that I can force the icon of an .avi file to be updated by choosing 'Rename' under the right-click menu that can be summoned when the file is selected in the file browser. If I actively make a change to its name (i.e. change it from 'test.avi' to 'Test.avi' for instance), sometimes the file will regain a 'picture'. Sometimes this doesn't work however. Note that it is necessary to actively make a change for this to have an effect - just selecting Rename and not changing anything in the name doesn't work.
As this occurs outside of AcidRip, it looks like the problem is in Gnome/Nautilus after all?
