Bug Description

Hi. There appeared some problems with 'accountsservice' -- a D-Bus interface for user account query and manipulation, that honestly have occurred day-to-day.

### PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
========================
A few weeks ago after login as a normal user, 'accountsservice' (used for querying and manipulating user account informations) crashed. On the beginning it was a random incident. After a few days, 'accountsservice' crashed each time after every user logs on. I think, that's all what I can write, to try to describe this issue, because everything seems to be okay -- no system freezing or slowdowns, no problems after packages update/upgrade etc.

### DETAILED INFORMATIONS:
==========================
* ProblemType: Crash
* Uname: Linux 3.2.0-51-generic-pae i686
* Architecture: i386
* DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 (Xubuntu 12.04 variant)
* Package: accountsservice 0.6.15-2ubuntu9.6
* ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu17.4
* NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
* Segfault happened at: 0xb76bb7c3: mov 0x10(%eax),%eax
* Executable Path (ProcCmdline): /usr/lib/accountsservice/accounts-daemon

Also '/var/log/apport.log' file contain some informations about this issue. Everything is in a attached log file.

,-----[ $ lsb_release -rd ]
| Description: Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
| Release: 12.04
`-----

### WHAT HAVE HAD AN IMPACT ON THIS ISSUE?
==========================================
I have no ideas, why it started to happen. Only one thing, which I've done for a few weeks before problems with 'accountsservice' was 'conky-all' install. Nothing more, nothing less -- no serious administrative tasks were performed (except e.g. kernel or programs updates via APT utility or UpdateManager, but it seems to be obvious).

### APPENDIX:
=============
I would like to notice, that this issue still occurs, after next point Xubuntu update -- from 12.04.2 to 12.04.3 version. So for now, kernel version is; 3.2.0-55-generic-pae. Anything related with this bug, when all of this started to happen, remains unchanged.
One more, important, thing to mention is that - in my case - 'accountsservices' crashed even after a fresh Xubuntu 12.04 install. For more info, please see comment #12.

Best regards.

I have also occasionally gotten accounts-daemon-related crashes right after login, for several months now, on two machines that both run Xubuntu 12.04, and which I've kept up-to-date by always upgrading packages when prompted by the system.

Today, I started to look more closely into this, and googling for the Title of the crash brought me here (though in my case, the title is "accounts-daemon crashed with sigsegv in dbus_connection_unref()", not "..._send()". The "internal error" dialog gives this information (I'm not reporting all fields, because you can't copy-paste from error dialog, which, by the way, is a usability problem -- I've marked the contents of those fields as "..."):

Hi. I have to inform/notice, that 'accounts-daemon' (accountsservice 0.6.15-2ubuntu9.6) crash still occurs, even in a new Xubuntu update - 12.04.3 with 3.2.0-53 Linux kernel.

Best regards.

Hi. I have something really important to report; today, after a fresh Xubuntu 12.04.3 LTS installation and after very first login I noticed a warning message about application crash. I was pretty surprised, because once again it was about 'accounts-daemon' and crash title looked this way;

,-----[ CRASH TITLE: ]
| accounts-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()
`-----

It's strange. Newly system installed, first login and... crash. Something happens with Xubuntu 12.04 and 'accountsservice/accounts-daemon' application.

Best regards.

Hi Mr Treglia. That's good, but what about Precise 12.04.3? There still is the same warning after user login. Over and over again it's (it's worth to notice, that many of reported issues - reported by users - are related to Xubuntu 12.04).

I also have an encrypted home directory and experience the same problems. I'm not sure how serious this bug is, other than that it's annoying to click away the windows that say 'Ubuntu has experienced an internal error'.

Hi Roalt. True, it is very frustrating to click on a window with notices about this crash after every login. I also have an encrypted home partition, but if 'accountsservice'; "provides a set of D-Bus interfaces for querying and manipulating user account information (...) based on the useradd, usermod and userdel commands" in my opinion it should/could have an impact on a moments when we or installed applications adding new user etc. But it is only my opinion.

Anyway, definitely there is some problem. And it seems to growing on every weeks...

Best regards.

I am now getting this error daily, on Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS with encrypted home directories.
It actually began after I installed a second Linux distro alongside, which replaced GRUB2 with GRUB. I restored GRUB2 and began reguarly getting this error on log-in
"accounts-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in dbus_message_unref()"
"destination... not located in a known VMA region (needed writable region)!"

Hello Enrique and GTrider. Thanks for notice about this crash. Something is happening with a 'account-service' package in 12.04 LTS series. Since I'd reported this bug, I have exactly the same problem after every login. Each day.

I am getting this crash on all of my systems: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS. Most times, I send the crash report to Ubuntu. They must be getting hundreds of these reports a day!

Why have the feature to report crashes if the reports are just ignored?

Why is Ubuntu ignoring this? has anyone from Ubuntu read these posts in the past 9 months?

Hi all. Yes, it's so frustrating, that this problem/crash happening for a long time, without any reaction. I mean without any update for a Precise. It seems, that this issue is not so important from a Developers points of view. In fact, it is not a security or stability matter, right?

Hello. It seems, that this problem still is not fixed in 12.04 LTS Release (e.g. Xubuntu: yes, I know it has EoL status). `accountsservice` crashing every time after every user logs in. But it seems, that "solution" is to disable `apport` via '/etc/default/apport' file. It's pretty simple:

1) edit apport file;
$ sudo leafpad /etc/default/apport

2) change 'enabled=1' option to 'enabled=0'

3) save and exit.

That's all. After system restart etc., and user login, `accountsservice` crash does not occur. As I already mentioned: Xubuntu 12.04 LTS is EoL and it seems that this issue is fixed in Ubuntu (see above table with 'Affects', 'Status', 'Importance' etc. rows).

Best regards.
