Stops responding when modifying normal style font

To reproduce:
Open Abiword. Select Format>Create and Modify Styles...
Select Normal and choose Modify...
In the bottom-right corner there is a dropdown box of properties. Choose "Font". The font picker appears, and all the subwindows so far stop responding -- you can click on buttons but they have no apparent effects.

Quitting Abiword leaves the Styles, Modify Styles, and Font windows hanging until you force close again.

Obviously the desired behavior is to allow the user to pick a font to use in the style.

A nearly fresh install of 12.04.1 LTS. I do have some extra fonts installed, but other applications aren't choking on font pickers.

Could you please provide a screen recording via the package recordmydesktop?

As well, is this problem document dependent? If so, could you please provide the document that this problem occurs in?

This is unreproducible in Xubuntu.

I am attaching a RecordMyDesktop recording. The bug occurs with the default template that opens with AbiWord.

In the recording, in the font picking dialog, I'm clicking but nothing is happening. Don't know how well that comes across in the video.

I notice nvidia drivers is used in this video I have reproduced it on lubuntu 17.04. I have not tried any other drivers to see if that is the problem. I am using an nvidia gtx 960 which was not released when this bug was recorded. I should try to reproduce on one of my laptops with intel
