I have recently downloaded ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso and the md5sum I calculated is 128f0c16f4734c420b0185a492d92e52. Where did you download the md5sum list file?

The iso file appears to be the one that is busted, not the checksum file. If you download the iso from bittorrent, it has a matching checksum, if you download it directly from the 12.04 release page, it fails the checksum.

For ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64, I am different files (with different MD5SUMS) from different mirrors:

File downloaded from http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso
09cd432eec022881e9d5f58e6a32bab3 ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso

File downloaded from http://nl.releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso
9fcc322536575dda5879c279f0b142d7 ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso

The MD5SUMS file (on both sites) says:
9fcc322536575dda5879c279f0b142d7 *ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso
