Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop
Hi, I'm pretty new to kubuntu, ubuntu etc. I purchased kubuntu ver. 6.06 from a ebay seller. I tried to do a clean install on an older intel computer with a celeron processor running at 466 Mhz, and 256 mb ram on a 20 gigb fomatted hdd. I would click to "insall or run from disk". It would then get to "loading essential drivers" "ok" Then: "mounting root file system". That's as far as it gets. I thought it might have been the disk. So I got one from the kubuntu shipit site. I put that disk (kubuntu ver. 6.06) into the same computer. It went through the post and stopped. Stating that I needed to use "CD2 or update my bios". Since I couldn't update my bios, and had no idea what CD2 was, I bought a "newer" computer. A Gateway with a P4 1.4 processor, 256 mb rimm ram and 64 mb nVidia graphics card. It will load (from the cd) the kubuntu desktop. I will then click the "install" icon and will it go through the partitoning step, and then make it (always) to step 6. "Installer" would quickly get to 97% and will freeze (computer). It some times makes to: "Copying files 13:04 (etc.) remain". Get to 10, maybe 25% and then freeze! I also ran check cd for errors,(on both) and would get "ok" untill it gets to: "checking./casper/filesystem.sqaushfs". The blue progress bar will cycle through a few times. And then instead of "ok" it would say: "mismatch" and then continue checking the disk followed by all "ok"s. I cannot post a bug report as the computer is not online yet. I will try later to get it hooked up online. I'm just trying to install this os to see if it would be worth using instead of windows! Thanks. |

Thanks for the bug report, Mark.
Could you please try checking the CD for defects at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck ? Thanks
Let me know how that works for you. |

No, it's not an automated response. Most all work done on launchpad is by volunteer or core developers. Whenever you reply to an email update of this bug, it is posted as a comment. So when your email client quotes me, it appears as if I'm saying the same thing over and over!
Usually whenever I see this sort of error I would tell you to try getting another disc from ShipIt or downloading another yourself. But since you've already tried two discs, I'm not sure what to try next. Hopefully someone who knows more than me can help you. |

Great. I'm closing this bug until you can test the new ShipIt CD. Let me know here if the new one _still_ doesn't work :)
Thanks for trying out Kubuntu! |

Mark has privately informed me that this is still a problem:
Well I finally received my Ubuntu ver.6.06.1 LTS disk
from the "shipit" site. I installed it on a formatted
clean drive. (Gateway P-4 1.4 Ghz, 256 mb ram, 20 gig
hdd and a nVidia 64 mb graphics card. After a couple
of "installer" crashes, it finally installed. I went
to "update" some files that "Synaptic Package Manager"
said I needed to update. I am connected via cable
modem. It would download but NOT install the programs.
In "Terminal" it would read: "dpkg: parse error, in
file /var/lib/dpkg/available near line 7137 package
libebook 1. 2-5 'depends' field, invalid name 'libdat
! server. 2-7': character '!' not allowed- only
letters, digits and -+,_ allowed E:
sub-process/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)".
It also tells me that I have "6 broken programs". When
I find them via "broken" filter, I try to update
(reinstall) them I receive the above message. I would
send a bug report via my Ubuntu computer but it will
not let me: "There was an error submitting the bug
report: Failed to execute child
process"/home/mark/bugs" (permission denied)" I can
not download and INSTALL anything. I will get this
message: "The application "file roller" has quit
unexpectedly". I really would like to give this OS a
try but it just keeps frustrating me. Thank you again, Mark |
