Bug Description

testing of ubuntu 11.10 so far, there is no screen saver, only a screen lock in "screen" option under system preferences. Is this coming with the final RC and just being left out of the beta for space? Am I missing something in the development/changes? I downloaded ubuntu 11.10 on Sept 1st and installed to see any change on this but none that I can see. Thus far I have been testing Alpha 3 for the last few weeks and had hoped this was only left for later.

It's more sweeping than just fonts, there are lots of missing settings. I reported bug 837099 for this a few days ago.

I *think* that it's because 11.10 are just using the Gnome3 control settings, which the Gnome devs say were "completely redesigned" to make them easier to use, and they fall woefully short of being complete.

Found this morning that it may be a Gnome 3 decision. Can anyone verify that these relate to Oneiric Directly?:

Just to add to this bug. When my screen should be locked I have to actually hit escape to bring up the unlock/password dialogue. This is probably not intuitive for most users.

Just to add (unless I've missed something) there doesn't appear to be any option or any way to stop the screen blanking after a maximum of 1 hour (no disable option). This prevents us from testing fully as our use involves machines that need to display constant on screen info.

I would also add that the label for these options ("Screen") is confusingly similar to that used to adjust the screen resolution. It took everyone I asked several minutes to find the options and several gave up looking!

hey all, using Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 and have the same issue! When is Ubuntu 11.10 getting a screensaver since release is due this month! is it due to be included with RC? If so, it will be too late to test for bugs and issues! I think a screensaver is important as it assists to save your screen when its on for an extended time. 11.04 had screensaver. why remove it?

They probably say why re-add it to gnome 3 settings. Screen savers only help really old CRTs from the eighties and plasma screens that ignore monitor off signals. They are not necessary.

I have not tried 11.10 yet but has anyone tried installing xscreensaver?

Manually removing gnome-screensaver and installing xscreensaver using apt appears to work.
