Same problem here. Booted to command line, installed gdm and ran it to temporarily get around this problem. Was able to get to a login screen, login and use ubuntu but in a semi-usable state.

Same problem here on ASUS eeePC900. This is a machine that can't run unity (GMA900, Celeron 900)

With eternal monitor plugged in, after ctl-alt-F1 to terminal and typing in startx, error box with "failed to load session gnome" and logout button shows.

Disconnecting external monitor, X-server tries to start but gets into "no protocol specified" loop.

Rebooting and attempting the fix specified in Launchpad 804171 resulted in
    liblightdm-gobject-1-0_0.9.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
and
    lightdm-gtk-greeter_0.9.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

Appears to be fixed for me after the latest updates as of July 27, 2011 6pm PST. LightDM appears to be working again. Noticed it was one of the updates that was installed.

** WORKAROUND ** (based on #4)

Go into VT1, su to root

Changed /etc/apt/sources.list to point to main repositories (mine were Canada)

   apt-get install lightdm

Reboot

run Update Manager normally

Reboot

NOTES:
1. batt ind now shows empty
2. gets update-apt-xapian-index crash after desktop starts (see #817370)
