As an update, I tried the following to no avail, but may help others that have this issue:

Ubuntu sound troubleshooting:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

And updating to the latest alsa-drivers though Natty is new:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

Alsa documentaion on the driver it loaded on my system:
http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-kmirror.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/ALSA-Configuration.txt;hb=e539e2d8569a3f7725bef60342fd06ff7eaeb9d5

As seen on doing link #1, alsa is detecting my system with:

!!Loaded sound module options
!!--------------------------

!!Module: snd_intel8x0
 ac97_clock : 0
 ac97_quirk : (null)
 buggy_irq : N

As seen above, the ac97_quirk is (null) which the alsa documentation does not show as a valid option. I have not tried changing that to default etc. I am maybe just beyond being a linux newbie, so need to look up everything etc... My sound preferences does not have a separate selection for internal speakers vs. headphone. As seen from the output the headphone is detected.

All I did to fix the issue was install gnome-alsamixer and x the box for headphone sense...now to figure out why the alsa equalizer plug-in doesn't appear.

I've the same problem in a fresh install of oneiric : the sound is play on both headphones and Loudspeakers.
No possibility to switch.

Like Colin, i install gnome-alsamixer. The box for headphone sense was already active. If i blank it : no sound at all on both headphones and Loudspeakers.
