Bug Description

Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2
When I try to logoff/suspend/shutdown, the computer hangs and I have to hold the power button to make it shutdown. When it happens I can see some sort of random horizontal stripe at the top of the screen and some dots in the middle of the screen alternating colors (the dots are like when Ubuntu is loading).

This ONLY happens on my Laptop + Asus eee PC. It does NOT happen on any of my desktops.
Also, in all my computers I have upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10, which by the way did not have this bug. However, it appears to also occur in fresh installation: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10683912

I have this bug on three desktop machines which have been upgraded from 10.10 (where there was no problem) to 11.04 beta 2.

Logging out of Unity/Ubuntu Classic/KDE leads to a hard hang, where the machine logs out to a
blank screen. The only way to shut down after this is to press the power button.

Similarly, issuing a shutdown command (even as root in terminal) gives a hard hang. Two of the machines in question have discrete nvidia graphics cards and are running the nvidia driver, one is fglrx. I tried nouveau on one of teh nvidia machines, but it also hung on logout.

I tried with acpi=off but still no dice.
Furthermore, I tried a verbose shutdown by removing "quiet" from the boot parameters but, at the point of the shutdown that the pc hangs, I can only see the first line clearly, the second line is visible but a bit cut-off (this is the stripe at the top of the screen I was referring to) and the rest of the screen is just black.

I removed the nvidia graphics card from one machine that was hanging on logout/shutdown and switched it to the internal Intel graphics and it now shuts down and logs out OK, so it looks like it is graphics related.

I think you are right about it being graphics related: With today's updates I can now shutdown properly and there was an nvidia driver update among them
Is the bug also fixed for you?

I haven't had a chance to put the card back in the nvidia machine to check, but hopefully the update will have fixed it. I also have an fglrx machine displaying similar behaviour and that is still not logging out or shutting down properly with all the latest updates (22/04) applied.

There was an fglrx update last night after I sent the message, but the bug is still there for me after applying it.

Alexander Karatarakis, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

This bug is affecting me. Started after a recent Update. When I try to shutdown it just hangs. Was working before. Have to do a hard shutdown with the power button after trying:
sudo shutdown -t 0 -h now

or

sudo halt

sudo reboot works fine.
