Thanks for the report Jonas!

A new version of Unity 2D has been pushed to the daily PPA that might fix the issue. Can you check?
If you can still reproduce it, do you think it could be the same issue as in bug 740280?

Can you also paste the ouptut of:

$ gconftool --get /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode

Changed in unity-2d:
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Incomplete

I had the problem today with a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04, I think the problem happened after using LibreOffice, I see it does not integrate well with Unity interfase.

@Prada: could you please paste here the output of the following command typed in a terminal:

    gconftool-2 -R /desktop/unity-2d

Thank you!

jelevin@jel-dell:~$ gconftool --get /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode
No value set for `/desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode'

@Jim: that is very interesting, there should definitely be a value set for 'hide_mode'… How did you install unity-2d? Note that the following command should fix the issue:

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity-2d

Hi there. First time posting on launchpad. And this bug has happened to me 2-3 times now (using 11.04). I second the earlier poster, who suspect it might an issue with Libreoffice since seems to only be happening to me when I'm using Libreoffice.

$ gconftool --get /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode

Results in: No value set for `/desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode'

And, "$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/unity-2d" did not give me any output.

Found a solution though, on the ubuntu forums: Simply take an icon and hover it above the panel as if wanting to add it to the panel. You don't need to drop it in the panel even, the panel will be functioning afterwards.

Hope this helps! :)

Nils: the solution mentioned in the forum post is for Unity, not Unity-2D. Which one of the two are you running?

I'm having this issue again, and it appears with all the maximized apps. And
I also get the "No value set for `/desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode"
message.

@Jonas: how did you install unity-2d? Was it launched as a fallback environment to Unity-3d because your hardware doesn’t support it, or did you explicitly choose to log in to Unity 2D?

Hi Oliver I installed it using the Daily build via the PPA. I explicit
choose to install it at that time. I use Unity-3d without any problems.

@Jonas: issuing the following commands in a terminal should fix the issue for you:

    gconftool-2 --type=int --set /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode 2
    gconftool-2 --type=bool --set /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/use_strut false
