Bug Description
When there is absolutely no free space on "/" left,
the boot freezes after "Checking battery state... [OK]".
It says that "gdm" is running, restarting it makes the screen flash some times but it returns to the commandline.
"xinit" says something with "couldn't build keymap" (i didn't want to reproduce the error in order to get the exact error, I'm happy the machine is running again).
I don't know if it is possible to start the GUI without diskspace, but the user should be given a correct warning at least or a quick-fix if possible.
Ubuntu 10.10
gdm: 2.30.5-0ubuntu4
GNOME: 2.32.0

Quick fix is to boot from the Live CD, mount the internal main drive from the places menu and move/remove some large files.
!USE WITH CAUTION! NAME_OF_ MAIN_HD/ path/to/ file.deleteme
$ sudo rm /media/
If you are deleting a directory, use -r for recursive, if you have issues deleting the file use -f for force.
Be careful and preform a backup before deleting files, if it is mission critical.
