Bug Description

Using maverick on amd64, fully upgraded, KDE desktop-effects do not work since some time.

When trying to enable them via kwin config I get this information:

"Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:"

But no issue is listed.

Log when launching kwin manually:

kwin() KWin::Workspace::setupCompositing: Initializing OpenGL compositing
kwin() KWin::Workspace::setupCompositing: KWin has detected that your OpenGL library is unsafe to use, falling back to XRender.
kwin(): Failed to initialize compositing, compositing disabled

For debugging I tried to run glxgears, which work,s but only at 280 fps

Xorg log shows nothing suspicious.

Maybe the latest release of xf86-video-ati (6.13.2 from yesterday) would help:

I reported a similar bug today and I've been trying to find it (with no success) so that I can give an update: I have found that I can get desktop effects to work by clearing the 'enable functionality checks' checkbox. I hope this is relevant, please ignore if it isn't.

Hi there!

Thanks for reporting this bug! Your bug seems to be a problem with the KDE program itself, and not with our KDE packages. While we appreciate your issue, it would be better if it was tracked at https://bugs.kde.org, so that the KDE developers can deal with this speedily and have direct communication with you as the reporter for more effective debugging.

Thanks!
