Bug Description

A Samsung SGH-X830 is no longer recognized in Rhythmbox after an upgrade to Lucid from Karmic. It can see it in Nautilus but not in Rhythmbox, although when it is plugged in via USB there's a prompt asking whether to open it in Rhythmbox. This device is an MTP player.

Installing Karmic's libmtp8 library causes the device to be recognized.

Thanks for your query.
I haven't updated to 10.10 as I want to stay on the 10.04 LTS release.
I have 10.10 running in a VirtualBox but I can't see anything connected via USB from there...

Hi, this problem still exists in 10.10, which I am now running on a USB live stick.
I have the plug-in "Portable Players - MTP" installed in Rhythmbox 0.13.1, and I also have the following packages installed:
libmtp8, python-pymtp, mtp-tools, mtpfs
The player appears briefly in the left-hand pane of Rhythmbox as "Unknown device", then it disappears and the following error appears:
"Media player device error. Unable to open the Samsung X830 Mobile Phone device"
Thanks.

Hi, I'm still having this problem with 11.04.
Is there any progress fixing it?

Joeyboy, please give me the full results of:

 * mtp-detect
 * mtp-connect

And plus, try to reset your device with

   mtp-reset

(Obviously, all the above commands need to run *after* having plug'd the player)

Thanks in advance.

Hi there, it's still not working in the beta 2 of Ubuntu 11.10.
It'd be great if the fix could make it for the final version of 11.10 ...

This looks like the device is either:

- Not accessible due to being non-writeable in /dev/bus/usb* in which case
 the problem would be in the udev scripts, but I think these should be pretty
 OK...

- Something else like gphoto2 etc is already hogging the device.

I suspect the latter.

It seems like there have been a number of great fixes for Samsung/Androids that are fixed in Precise but it would be really great to have them rolled back into Natty and Lucid LTS.
