Almost the same problem with Lucid Beta 2 and kernel updated to 2.6.32-21.
Error messages:
cat /var/log/dmesg | grep nForce
[ 0.351578] cpufreq-nforce2: No nForce2 chipset.
[ 15.016439] i2c i2c-0: nForce2 SMBus adapter at 0x4d00
[ 15.016446] ACPI: resource nForce2_smbus [0x4e00-0x4e3f] conflicts with ACPI region SM00 [0x4e00-0x4e3f]
[ 15.016450] nForce2_smbus 0000:00:03.2: Error probing SMB2.
It does not seem to cause problems in work? but makes boot process twice longer/

To clarify the behaviour: I can confirm just error. Other problems (not booting, fschk hangs,..) seem unrelated.

I get a blinking cursor for about 10 seconds, then I see the "error probing smb2" for 2 seconds and then I see plymouth for 2 seconds which is followed by GDM then.

I too have problems with the standard nouveau driver. I can get it to work just after being offered the x-failsafe option. If I go with the first choice (low settings for this boot), everything is ok. Booting with the binary blobs is fine as well.

I attach 2 logs: Xorg.failsafe.log deals with booting using the nouveau driver, Xorg.5.log deals with booting using the nVidia blob.

Same situation here on motherboard ASUS M3N78-VM with Mythbuntu 10.04 (incl all updates).
Kernel message at startup: nForce2_smbus 0000:00:01.1: Error probing SMB2.

Is tihs a reason, that Nvidia nouveau does not work either, various Xorg.confs tested.
Always get a: "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA gaphics device"

Xorg.1.log in VESA / failsafe mode: Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

Attaching Xorg.0.log
