Bug Description

After installing Ubuntu 10.04, LL Beta2, on a Sony Vaio VPCF111FB, and connecting the laptop to the TV with a HDMI cable, the TV probes for signals and then says "No Signal". I have NVidia 195 installed.

I have the same issue with Sony Vaio VPC EB1E1E and ATI Radeon 5470. With HDMI cable it says "No signal".
Tried also with VGA cable and my monitor (Samsung T200) doesn't even recognize that the VGA input is connected (the laptop detects the monitor though).

The same here (Lucid): "No signal" with Samsung LCD TV LE32R41B and Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS with nvidia driver 195.36.15 on a Sony Vaio VGN-Z31WN using HDMI.

Same with NVIDIA 8200M.

Even newest driver 195.36.24 does not work, as well as the nuvauo.

Both drivers reconzize the connected TV and his features thru DDS (means the Modell Name and the supported resultions are visible int the nvidia config), but then after clicking "apply" the signal does not come along to the TV.

Either the TwinView nor the "Seperate X Screen" works (even after reseting) the X-Server.

The TV always reports "No Signal" or "Unsupported Mode".

For me it's a similar problem with the latest (195.136.15 on lucid x64) driver: no audio via HDMI

I'm running the Asrock Ion 330 which comes with a Geforce 9400.
In the following (german) thread there are people running Geforce 8k and 9k graphic cards reporting the same problem:

But for us at least the screen comes up when connected via HDMI.

1st check if your HDMI Soundcard is dedected.

Try aplay -l and look for the outout smiler :

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]
  Subdevices: 2/2
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: VT1708S Digital [VT1708S Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

If you see something like this "card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]"
your HDMI Audio should work.

If you still doesnt hear something then it is becouse the "Mute" for HDMI/Digital output is set.

Check ALSA Mixer and open his settings.

There are settings for volume controls which are hidden (not displayed)

This are called for example "ICE958" on most NVIDIA Cards.

Click to enable this volume setting in ALSA Mixer and uncheck the "mute" checkbox.

Right after this you should hear a sound.

Be sure to set HDMI as Sound Output in GNOME/KDE Multimedia Settings.

if you do not see your HDMI Soundcard listed with "aplay -l" then you don't will get it to work, since it is not supported right now by ALSA.

You can try to download and compile yourself a new alsa version from www.alsa.org.

Lucid is already shipped with currently latest ALSA version.

Same issue here with Lucid (amd64), Nvidia GeForce Go 6150. External monitor connected with VGA cable and nvidia-settings detects the monitor and its resolution, but the monitor reports "No signal detected."
