This appears to be an issue where the vboxguest module fails to initialize and calls an assert function which does bad things.

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → virtualbox-ose (Ubuntu)

Thank you for reporting this bug.

What is your host what is your guest?

As well, Ubuntu & virtualbox-ose have had numerous updates. Please update and repost detailed error report.

Host and guest were Ubuntu Lucid. I have not seen this again since, and I now think it was VirtualBox-related, so I will close this. Feel free to re-open of course if it is of particular interest to you.

Thank you for your contribution to this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. My apologies as I should not have marked this bug Invalid. Because I could not find a 3.2.8 Maintainer PPA nor would a live CD of Maverick Meerkat fit this situation, you will have to wait for someone with more knowledgeable to help. However, the best I can offer is to download the newest VirtualBox 3.2.8 via http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.2.8/virtualbox-3.2_3.2.8-64453~Ubuntu~lucid_i386.deb Disclaimer: this is a Pandora's box suggestion but will help settle this issue.

I actually marked it invalid myself, since I am one of the upstream VirtualBox developers, and as Chase and myself mentioned this is almost certainly VirtualBox-related (if I had initially noticed the "int 3" in the backtrace which Chase pointed out I would not have submitted this in the first place).
I also think that it is fixed upstream now :)
Thanks a lot for your work.
