Reported by Apport, I would not otherwise have been aware that anything was wrong. Happened inside a VirtualBox VM, after installing Additions - possibly Additions-related, possibly not.

This appears to be an issue where the vboxguest module fails to initialize and calls an assert function which does bad things.
