Uninstalling of Nvidia drivers causes the display to go blank on reboot

As part of XOrg Proprietary Drivers testing of Nvidia drivers using LUCID 10.4 Alpha daily build (03/07/2010), I uninstalled all NVidia drivers using the Synaptic package manager. After reboot screen, for a second, shown modules loading (No GUI) in terminal fashion and then the screen goes blank. after 5-10 seconds the monitor disables as if the system was shutdown, but the system is still active. I was not able to get the rescue prompt either. I believe that this is not an expected behavior and in the worst of the worst case scenarios the user should be dropped to a terminal prompt.

I am not sure how to gather information since I can even get to any terminal prompt.

I have attached my system information, please let me know if i can provide any more information.

And you did remove the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf or at least removed the lines pointing to NVidia proprietary drivers?

          No I did not, test execution steps do not recomend doing that,
please take a look at what we are asked to perform regarding this TC:

   1. Boot with functioning proprietary driver
   2. Using the GUI software management tools, mark the proprietary driver
   for removal
   3. *Verify the driver is removed by running dpkg -l '*fglrx*' and dpkg -l
   '*nvidia*' and noting any remaining installed components *
   4. *Reboot *
   5. *Verify system starts up in GUI mode *
   6. Verify the appropriate open source driver loaded by checking
   /var/log/Xorg.0.log
   7. Test basic functionality (see above)
   8. Test 3D, to verify the OpenGL libraries got properly reinstalled

I would have made those changes had I got the terminal prompt, but
unfortunately I do not even get that. But should it not ask if the drivers
is no longer available. If I am not mistaken, it should fallback to low
graphics mode if driver mentioned in xorg.conf is no longer present.

Is this problem present with the latest updated Karmic's, Lucid's or Maverick's packages?
