There is no strict Ubuntu package for this request, but the ubuntu-on-ec2 team (smoser) should see it because of the ec2-images tag.

Please publish current, updated Ubuntu AMIs on Amazon EC2 for 9.10 Karmic and 8.04 Hardy.

According to the draft proposal on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UEC/Images/RefreshPolicy "New AMIs will be published for stable releases based on" a few conditions including things like time it takes to perform upgrades and other issues.

My current request to get updated AMIs is prompted because of an ugliness which occurs when performing upgrades on the current Karmic AMIs. An update to the package "grub-pc" forces the user to read and respond to two manual prompts, even if attempts are made to have the upgrade accept all defaults.

For example, running
  ami-1515f67c ubuntu-images-us/ubuntu-karmic-9.10-i386-server-20091027.1.manifest.xml
the following commands
  export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
result in the graphical grub-pc config prompts attached to this bug.

This is annoying and interrupts some semi-automated instance setup code I run.

I suppose this might be submitted separately as a bug report against grub-pc, but it's been a while since the EC2 AMIs were updated and releasing new ones should solve this problem and generally speed up instance startups.

For the record, apt-get update/upgrade currently takes over a minute on the above AMI with an m1.small instance.
