Bug Description

as the summary states, the package gives an error on my attempts to upgrade with exit status 10. It should be worth noting that no method of initial installation worked except synaptic package manager. not restricted devices, not add/remove, and not building the driver from the nvidia binarys (told me i was missing kernel modules)

also of note is the fact that the drivers still appear to be working. I still have 3d hardware acceleration, compiz still functions, etc.

my guess is that the RT kernel is being finicky again, and not accepting the kernel modules for whatever reason.

I'll gladly supply more info if someone tells me what i need to show.

This may be more of a general issue not specific to the -rt kernel, but hard to say so far.

Could you please find and attach your build log that shows this issue? The file will be found someplace like:

 /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/build/make.log

The numbered directory may be different depending on what version you have installed, but if you poke around it should be somewhere like that.

I found the make logfile in
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/2.6.31-9-rt/x86_64/log, don't know if
that's significant, but here it is.

I believe that after a standard system upgrade today, which included
an nvidia update, the driver module builds again. I hope the attached
make.log provides the neccessary details.

Well that's good news, although a bit mysterious since the last nvidia update I know of was some weeks ago. The make.log is quite interesting, I'll dig into it. Would you mind also attaching your /var/log/dpkg.log so I can see what exactly upgraded with nvidia to solve the issue for you?

Hmm odd. Both of those make.log files show essentially the same output, and both seem to indicate that nvidia.ko did in fact successfully build both times.

I wonder if it is just a timing issue (as described in bug #438398) where X tries to boot before DKMS has finished building the driver. I'll check with mario. It would definitely be interesting to see your dpkg.log.

Actually nevermind, the original report included the apt logs. So looking at them one error jumps out:

2009-10-10 05:48:25,479 ERROR NvidiaDetection returned a error: datadir './modaliases/' not found

Not sure whether that is a hard failure or a warning, but interesting.

Aha, there was one update to -nvidia, which included a patch to fix broken build on -rt kernels. I bet the upgrade you referred to was from 185.18.36-0ubuntu8 to 185.18.36-0ubuntu9, which added a patch to fix -rt and that must have done it for you. Okay I'll mark this bug fixed, thanks for your help.

I've looked through the dpkg.log and found that this was indeed the
case. Still it's kinda annoying the upgrade from jaunty to karmic
failed because of it, leaving me with an unstable and unclean system.
Got that fixed now though :-)

Thanks for your help and time.
