Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-express

This bug is the ignorance of users at large and worsened by lies and brain-washing tactics employed by the dictator OS.

Some possible remedies:

(1) Let others see and use Ubuntu on one's notebook or PC.
(2) When Vista or XP dies prematurely, save their data using a Ubuntu live cd (or flash drive).
(3) To restore life to their dead computer, suggest and help install Ubuntu, even as a dual boot configuration, in preparation for the next demise of Windows.
(4) Add some eye candy to Ubuntu, like an awesome wallpaper and special effects (if their display is capable).
(5) Make sure they have the restricted applications up and running, e.g. Adobe reader and flash.
(6) Make sure they have the necessary language support and input methods running if they are not English users (e.g. Chinese or Japanese).
(7) Sometimes, the interface may need to be tweaked to look as closely as possible to Windows (as one did request this), wallpaper included.
(8) Counter lies and brain-washing from the dictator OS company with real, hands-on experience with Ubuntu whenever possible.
(9) Most importantly, give technical support and advice to get them familiarized and comfortable as well as feeling secure with Ubuntu.

I have had over 90% adoption success of Ubuntu using the above steps.

The revolution should begin when these believers start buying new computers.

Any other suggestions, ideas to remedy this bug? Much appreciated.

(10) Buy Ubuntu merchandise from store.canonical.com and wear it at all times. My Ubuntu beanie hat (paired with a free DVD) has already turned at least 1 Windows user into Ubuntu trial user.

(11) Burn Ubuntu CDs and DVDs (or buy them from store.canonical.com) and give them away to everybody who's interested.

thought: per #11, if people are interested, they are almost certainly not ignorant of ubuntu. Hence their interest. Unless they're ACTUALLY magpies, and simply like shiny discs.

(12) the route 1 approach: many of us are unofficial tech support for friends or especially the older generation. If they're not dogmaticly insistent on a certain solution that they don't actually understand, based on brainwashing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg), just install Ubuntu, noting (5) & (6), and bearing in mind that Ubuntu is no less intuitive to the technologically illiterate than Windows or Mac OSs. Then just let them get on with it. They'll have a better time than with other OSs, and since you'll be getting the blame and the call when anything goes wrong ANYWAY, they might as well be using something that will go wrong a lot less.
