Bug Description

In the Karmic repository the package libcupsys2 is no longer present. It has been replaced by the libcups2 package.
The driver for the canon printer MP540 however depends on the libcupsys2 package. The driver, a debian package, is available for download from the canon site.

Steps:
-When double clicking the package it opens in GDebi
-It tells me all dependencies are satisfied
-After clicking the install package button it start installing
-Then it tells me the dependency libcupsys2 is not satisfied (see screen-shot)

Thus, I cannot install the driver and use the printer properly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. Because of this the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Please report this bug to the provider of the software package. Thanks!

This problem still exists in Lucid. Is it possible for the libcupsys2 transitional package to be included in the repositories? There are also other printer drivers that rely on libcupsys2. Including the transitional package shouldn't be too much to ask for. This one (http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/cups/libcupsys2_1.3.9-17ubuntu3.9_all.deb) was just updated this June. So shouldn't it show up in the repos?

My reason for reopening this, is because there are new users coming from other OS's such as Windows and when they download the drivers for their printer, and try installing, it will fail on them. It creates a broken package and they have to go online and search for a fix, which if they don't know what they're doing they may not be able to find a solution. So if the transitional package gets included in the repos, it will fix this bug and they will not have any issues.

So, putting a random completely dummy package to fix issues for potentially hundreds of people a year vs waiting for canon to realize their package they released over two years ago that works on other distros without any problems doesn't work on Ubuntu.

The bug still exists.
