DKMS make.log for nvidia-185.18.36 for kernel 2.6.31-14-generic (x86_64)
Tue Oct 20 14:23:30 EEST 2009

The C compiler 'cc' does not appear to be able to
create executables. Please make sure you have
your Linux distribution's gcc and libc development
packages installed.

*** Failed CC sanity check. Bailing out! ***

make: *** [select_makefile] Error 1

What testcase are you looking for? The nvidia dkms package itself?

apparently the script runs a compiler check; I don't know why it fails, can't
reproduce it, but I assume that it tries to compile something which fails. I
mean this testcase

I have the same problem. Manually running "cc gcc-version-check.c" in the directory "/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/source" yeilds:

as: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libopcodes-2.20.so: file too short

Also, ldconfig says:

/sbin/ldconfig.real: File /usr/lib/libbfd-2.20.so is empty, not checked.

running "sudo apt-get install --reinstall binutils" fixed the problem.

during upgrade from 9.10 beta to 9.10 185-src package gave an error (grrr! ), retried in rescue mode, failed (noooohhh!!!),
this morning retried to finishe in rescue mode, suceeded (Owww yeah :D ),
i think / hope that it was due to the old kernel, nvidia driver and glx are working now, but after startup i got an error saying nvidia-185-kernel-source failed to install, (sorry i couldn't be more specific, still waking up and the problem somewhat resolved itself),
but it's very nice to see that the error-reporting works like a charm, nice job! (and no this is not irony, it's really nice to see that we can give some feedback).

Amit, there haven't been many reports of this issue lately, so I wonder if it might be resolved now with the latest nvidia? Could you confirm whether it is still a problem or not?

Well, for me, after the upgrade, a repair operation ran... and another during the reboot... then I just had to install the new driver from the standard system menu and all was as it should be.

Alright, well I'll go ahead and assume the issue is gone now. If that's incorrect please reopen with additional detail.
