Someone over at debian just filed an "Intent To Package" (ITP) for zxing:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=575967

Once it is packaged at debian, it'll likely make its way over to ubuntu. Not quite sure how long ITPs typically take, but at least that's movement.

Debian package intention is half a year old. Since QR code is getting used more and more, please consider having it packaged by Ubuntu packagers. Benefit is that users can create QR codes and other bar codes easily via command line and the lib will provide a framework welcoming developers to develop and offer GUI application for generating these codes.

Like tomcat6-examples, could also a package be created with the WAR from zxing.appspot.com as can be seen in action at http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/

The default command line tool and GUI from javase only provide off line decoding functionality. This WAR will provide off line encoding functionality via GUI/
